In this paper two different types of cyanate resins, the one produced by 637 Co., Jinan China and the other produced by Germany, were studied by means of Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), it indicated that the purity of cyanate produced by Germany was higher than that produced by 637 Co, Jinan.Three different kinds of catalyzer were chosen to analyze the effect of catalyzer on curing reaction of cyanate resins. It showed that catalyzer had great influence on the process of reaction: it shortened the gel-time of cyanate resins and lowered the curing reaction temperature and reduced the curing period of resins. Stannous caprylate (C16H30O4Sn) was more efficient than cobaltous naphthenate (C14H22CoO4) and dibutyltin dilaurate (C32H64C4Sn) as the catalyzer of cyanate resins.The curing process of cyanate resins was investigated by IR and it proved that different cyanate resins had different curing reactions which were caused by the different purity of cyanate resins. The cyanate resin produced by Germany could not be cured completely even at higher temperature, however, the cyanate resin produced by 637 Co. could be cured well at 170℃ without the catalyzer. It was true that catalyzer could not change the mechanism of curing reaction, but it would affect the process of the reaction.The co-curing behavior of cyanate resin with epoxy resin (E-51) was studied by methods of IR and DTA and the co-curing reaction mechanism was also discussed.The cured resin casts from two different cyanate resins were made and the properties of resin casts were evaluated. The results showed that the property of resin cast made of German cyanate resin was better than that made of Chinese cyanate resin.The properties of cast from cyanate resin copolymerized with E-51 epoxy resin were evaluated and it showed that the toughness of resin cast increased as epoxy resin was added.
