The parametric design method, which has good application prospects, is one of important research directions in CAD. In this paper, the principles and methods for parameter design were discussed. The recent developments in this area were also presented. Based on filling roll design principles, detailed methods for parametric design were studied, and then, the product models were set up. A friendly human-computer interaction interface was developed, so, the product mechanical drawings and relevant technology files could be turned out automatically after necessary customer data was input into the system. In this way, a parametric design method was realized.Based on mechanics, experiential parameters for key parts of filling roll products were obtained after a serial of field experiments. Product appearance drawing model for wide application was set up after relevant filling roll products in the past ten years were studied. On the basis of AutoCAD2004, the author designed menu files and DCL dialog boxes to realize communication between designers and computer in Auto Lisp language. What the designer should do was just inputting necessary products' parameters and running the program.The system could analyze the customer's data and output filling roll drawings according to technology files, manufacture security and customer's requirements automatically. After then, the inside parts could be designed and printed automatically. A small CAD system was designed that could help engineers to design filling roll products and technology files. All these could be done in a shorter time than before.In this paper, a new parameter design method that could design parts' drawings from assembly drawings was proposed. This method, which could combine mechanical drawings and technology files, was different from ordinary methods.
