China's Pharmaceutical Industry In The Context Of Wto Study

Since 1949, Chinese pharmaceutical industry has gone from small to large, from feeble to strong, and from underdeveloped to relatively advanced. The developmental journey has been challenging, but our pharmaceutical industry has made significant contributions towards the health and welfare of Chinese people.In this increasingly globalized world, China's membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) will promise the country's pharmaceutical industry as well as attract foreign investment in our healthcare industry. However, despite the great opportunities China's enterprises face with, China's WTO membership has also exposed us to many potential challenges. It is the purpose of this paper to analyze the impact of the WTO membership on China's pharmaceutical industry.Despite the importance of pharmaceutical industry in Chinese economy, there is little comprehensive investigation on the effects of WTO accession on Chinese pharmaceutical industry.To fill in the gap in the academic study, with regard to reduction of import tariff for pharmaceutical, removal of non-tariff measure, opening of service trade and investment field and reinforcement of IPR protection, this paper tries to explore the implications of WTO accession to the pharmaceutical industry in China and ventures to propose some suggestion on adjusting industry structures, product imitation and innovation, modernization of Chinese traditional medicine, and reform of pharmaceutical industry and pharmaceutical distribution channels. The thesis is ended in discussing Chinese pharmaceutical strategy with regard to WTO membership and macro-level recommendations to the Chinese government in order to speed up the development, and face world challenges.
