Virtual Design Technology (VDT) is a modern design technology. It bases on the information technology, the powerful computer platform, and the professional software of manufacture and achieves in the design project. It is a new field of research that developed in the 1990s. It refers to the computer graphics, the artificial intelligence, the computer networks, the information processing, the mechanical design and manufacturing and so on.In the thesis the virtual design bases on Pro/ENGINEER. This software has some characteristics: Parametric, Full Associativity, Feature Based Solid Modeling, Data Management, Assembly Management, Engineering Data Reuse, Easy to Use, Hardware Independence, and so on.This thesis accomplishes virtual models of primary parts of the headstock by the parametric feature modeling technology with the Pro/ENGINEER, achieves the virtual models of the column gear, bevel gear, spindle, headstock, bearing. It accomplishes the virtual assembly of parts, and whole of the headstock by using virtual assembly technology, and gets virtual headstock numerical model, and tests static model interference and kinematics simulation. The dynamics simulation is accomplished on the numerical model. It get the force of input gear on spindle in three speeds of 10r/min,710r/min, 1400r/min and analyze the input gear the rotate speed morehigher and the force more disequilibrium, using finite element analysis gets the most force and invalidation part is on the root of gear and on the position of assembly of gear 2.This thesis mainly studies the method of product virtual design by Pro/ENGINEER. It studies several key procedures of product virtual design and use the lathe headstock as an example. It studies the part modeling, kinematics simulation, dynamics simulation, the test of static model interference and finite element analysis. In the thesis it compares thedifferences and advantages between the virtual design and traditional design. It can get the conclusion by research in the article, the product of virtual design by Pro/ENGINEER has some advantages: powerful function, stable system, lower cost, easy popularization and so on. The thesis establishes the foundation for product virtual design base on Pro/ENGINEER. The design method has wider application foreground. By deep research this method will further develop its potential. The virtual design method base on Pro/ENGINEER is the most promising virtual design method.
