This paper is about the research of motorized spindles used in middle and small scale CNC machining centers. Firstly it has made the structure design of the spindle, and then, the dynamic and thermal characteristics of high-speed motorized spindle are studied with ANSYS software by FEA. Details of studies are as follows:1. The construction of the motorized spindle is designed based on solving some critical problems in construction design such as the static estimate of the spindle's construction parameter, the choice of motor and its cooling, the choice of bearings and also their lubricating and cooling, design for the dynamic balance.2. Three-dimensional FEA model of the motorized spindle are built up with ANSYS. Based on the 3-D FEA model, the modal and harmonic response characteristics of the motorized spindle are analyzed, and also the vibration mode, natural frequency and critical rotation rate are studied. Parts of the spindle's dynamic displacement response to the frequency also are studied, therefore, the rationality of the spindle design and construction are validated. At last, some measures for improving the dynamic characteristic of the motorized spindle are brought forward.3. Two-dimensional FEA model of the motorized spindle are built up with ANSYS. Based on the 2-D FEA model, the change of the temperature field and the temperature raising situation of the motorized spindle are analyzed, then the thermal and structure coupling analysis are studied by loading temperature after static thermal analyze, thermal deformation and heat stress of the motorized spindle is also in an analysis and discussion. At last, some measures for improving the thermal characteristic of the motorized spindle are brought forward.
