Reservoir scheduling is the key of hydropower station and reservoir long-term operation. At the same time, reservoir scheduling may carry on the adjustment to the amount of runoff, gather abundant and makes up dry, meet the electricity generation and various water departments need, enhance the water degree of utilization, increase economic efficiency of the electricity generation and the other water departments.On the other hand, reservoir's water is corresponding with upper river head so that it can decide the height of water head.The same runoff can gain more electrical power in high water head.Reservoir scheduling is a tradeoff between enhancing using of water and enhancing water level in order to gain most electrical quantities.At present, the domestic and foreign scholars had already conducted many thorough researches in the hydroelectric power station reservoir optimization scheduling problem and have obtained some important research results, but the traditional optimized method in the convergence rate, the restraining precision aspect has certain insufficiency. The reservoir optimization dispatch's method still needed to further study.Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a new evolutionary computation technique, inspired by swarm intelligence of bird flocking. It is first introduced by J.Kennedy and R.C.Eberhart in 1995. PSO is simple in concept, few in parameters and easy in implementation, so it has attach great importance to researchers for home and abroad and found applications in many areas since it's introduced.The main works are listed as follows:1) The significance of the research and main accomplishment of long-term cascade hydropower plants optimal generation operation and usual method are introduced. Models of reservoir optimal scheduling are summarized. The advantages and drawbacks of a variety of models are analysed.2) An improved PSO is proposed. Compared with standard PSO, it has a good effect.3) This new method is adapted in the case of Xiao wan reservoir programming. Firstly establishes the optimal model of Xiao wan hydroelectric station which is objecting to the maximal electricity production.Then, using traditional method and the new PSO method to solve this model. The results show that particle swarm optimization approach is efficient in solving reservoir optimal scheduling problems.4) This article summaries the work and gives the directions in the further research.
