This paper makes a preliminary study on the technology and application of FPGA. FPGA technology represents the latest development direction of EDA. Through the design based on HDL language and EDA tools, FPGA can achieve most of the hardware circuit functions of a complex system within a chip, with the characteristics of flexible design, high efficiency, low cost, short development cycle.Making research on applied technology of FPGA according with an example application is important and helpful to establishing and improving the EDA courses and practical system in university.Firstly, this paper studies the technology and application of FPGA,including the development process of EDA and PLD,the Categories of PLD,the structure and performance of PFGA, the products and programming of PLD,HDL and Quartus II.And then we analyze and compare with several commonly used measurements of digital frequency meter according with the design topics, which lays a theoretical foundation for the next work.Next,we establish a system block diagram, based on direct frequency measurement principle, and divide it into several functional modules from top to down by system-level design method. Each module is described by VHDL and simulated by Quartus II In order to ensure the correct functionality and performance requirements, and then is connected together to form the top-level circuit of digital frequency meter. The simulation results show that the functional requirements of the digital frequency meter are realized and the actual performance index meet the design requirements. Finally, This paper gives PFGA device selection and configuration as well as several necessary peripheral hardware circuit design.
