The operation of the high-speed electrified railway has enormously enhanced its requirements on reliability. However, the low reliability of OCS (Overhead Contact System) has been severely hindering the development of electrified railway. Further more, the transport disruption caused by the low OCS reliability exerts a significant impact on the national economy. Particularly at this development time of high-speed rail and heavy transport, the negative impact of traffic accidents is more far-reaching than ever before. Thus, more attention should be paid to the study of the OCS reliability engineering project. Industrially-developed countries abroad, such as the US, Britain, Japan, France and so on, have attached a sufficient importance on this newly-emerged discipline---reliability engineering project which has been in rapid development and wide application in many industries and sectors and has been focused on by the relevant railway department. In contrast, the reliability studies of China's railway sector started later and applied less than the industriously-developed countries. Therefore, an imminent study of catenaries, in terms of its reliability and maintenance optimization, should be carried out to meet the current demands.The developed maintenance program should take into account improving system reliability, the maintenance cost and time consumption as well. In addition, due consideration should be given to the limit of human resources, material resources and space as well. Regular maintenance intervals can simplify the development of maintenance plans, especially at present time when the train speed is ever rising, and the train operating frequency keeps increasing, periodic preventive maintenance can avoid the conflict between the train operators and the maintenance activities. Therefore, the periodic and preventive maintenance strategies will be discussed in this paper.As indices of the OCS maintenance activities to be measured are: the rate of total maintenance cost of (including various maintenance-relevant cost elements), equipment reliability, equipment availability, and so on, this article, drawing on results of previous studies, aims at seeking a reasonable strategy which features the maximum reliability and minimum maintenance costs, that is, to take the best mixed point of these two factors in order to achieve double-objective optimization.In the final part of this article, the obtained statistics and data will be contrasted and analyzed. The periodic preventive maintenance program is expected to be developed through the analytic approach which is adopted in this article, in order to optimize the OCS overhaul program.The painstaking efforts of studies and analysis work in this article are expected to play an important role or have a reference value in the optimization of OCS maintenance program...
