In electrified railway, overhead contact system is a key equipment to provide power for electric locomotive. Its reliability directly influence the safety and efficiency of the entire railway transport system. Since the overhead contact system is set up in the open, it is easily influenced by environment, climate and other natural factors, In addition, its load (locomotive) is impactive and unstability, which makes the overhead contact system become the major fault point in the power supply system of rail traction.Overhead contact system equipment is a system which is consisted of a variety of components. There are mush differences among various components in aspects of working life, loss characteristics, fatigue (aging) properties and the effect of failures. There are many kinds of faults in an equipment of overhead contact system.Some faults are caused by electrical failures. Some others are caused by mechanical failures. And, natural disasters may also cause certain failures in it. It is the research direction of this paper to continuously improve the reliability of overhead contact system equipment and reduce maintenance costs at the same time by studying failures of overhead contact system equipment and maintenance features, by exploring scientific maintenance strategy of overhead contact system equipment, which also has a special significance on improving the transport capacity of railway.During the past years, our country always take a kind of maintenance strategy which is called the scheduled repair for overhead contact system equipment, which arrange maintenance period according to experience. They often make use of the time of skylights maintenance to organize operation. However, this kind of maintenance strategy and organizational model has poor pertinency and low efficiency. In recent years, many Railway Bureaus have tried different kinds of innovations in management systems and equipment maintenance models of the electrified railway, and achieved good results and experiences. Among these recent maintenance theories, the Reliability Centered Maintenance(RCM) is a new maintenance method which is widely accepted. RCM's basic objective is to maintain the reliability and safety of equipment with minimized consumption of resources, and enable the maintenance projects to have highly pertinency to get twice the result with half the effort.This paper analyses existing maintenance strategies and organizational models of overhead contact system, and explains some advanced maintenance concepts from other industries and developed countries. In the paper, the theory of RCM will be applied to the maintenance of overhead contact system equipment, and I will use method of "fault tree analysis" to analyse the failure characteristics of overhead contact system equipment, and search for the independent causes which bring the faults. In addition, the paper designs the corresponding mathematical models for maintenance strategy by analyzing features of the useful life of contact line,insulators and other major parts. To apply the methods of Dynamic programming optimize maintenance strategy.The proposed"project repair"in this paper,which is a kind of centralized maintenance method, has been applied by the supply of Wuhan for nearly two years, and brought many good results.
