The generation of orthogonal-shaft face gear (FG), the geometric character of the tooth surface, the flash temperature of the FG and the distributing of tooth surface temperature analyzed by finite element methods are studied in the paper. The software about the flash temperature of the FG is also developed.The research on the generation of FG is made up of the derivation of the equations of FG tooth, contact lines and contact point on the tooth in processing, and of the visualization of contact lines, contact points and FG tooth surface.According to the differential geometry theory, the principle curvatures and principle relative curvature of the spur gear and the FG in line contact and point contact, the tooth surface relative speed and the tooth contact interface are analyzed, whose distributing on the tooth surface are visualized by computer.In the study of the flash temperature, the formula is given for the flash temperature by the heat exchange theory. The effects of geometric and operating parameters on the flash temperature are studied.The research on the flash temperature is made by finite element methods. The distribution of the flash temperature on tooth surface is obtained.
