The photometry linked with light distribution of automotive headlamp, and headlamp systems and standards are introduced in the paper. Based on advancing and comparing the principle of light distribution of traditional headlamp, the principle of light distribution of Multi-patch Reflector Automotive Headlamp (MRAH) is discussed about. The inherent distinction between MRAH and the traditional one is that the former distributes light by a reflector that consists of many surfaces and their shapes are random, not a simple conicoid. Its light-distribution len is replaced with a smooth transparent ordinary one. The designed MRAH adopted this light distribution and reflection in a whole has many advantages, such as small volume, light, clear surface, high power utilization and high performance of aerodynamics.A technology route for the light-distribution design of multi-patch reflector is advanced in the paper. The establishment of basic shape and partition of function regions is analyzed during the establishment of reflector model. The calculating method of illumination and show of light shape is discussed, and actual lighting condition is realized. According to country standard, the design of reflector is completed through light distribution project. All kinds of errors influencing light distribution performance of MRAH are researched and some modified projects are given in the paper. The equal thickness model and the level placement model of reflector are established in the analysis errors in manufacturing. Based on the above thoughts and methods, in the VC++ 6.0 environment, a multi-patch reflector CAD prototype system is developed. The development of the software does beneficial study to the light distribution design of MRAH and establishes the foundation to further research.
