This paper proposes a XML Web Services-based approach for remote design system. Based on the approach a remote design system for Bridge Crane is established; also the paper investigates on the design calculation of mechanical products in a web environment and the auto-drawing technology of CAD graphics.XML Web Services-based Remote Design System for Bridge Crane allows crane engineers to input the design parameters by the browser. Then the server makes all necessary selection and calculation, and output the specification and designed graphics of the product according to the parameters. Engineers can work with the same designing project without the restriction of places and time.Based on the deep study of attributed network technology, XML Web Services technology , Microsoft .NET technology and Modern Method of Mechanical Design, XML Web Services-based Remote Design System for Bridge Crane is studied and developed on a four tiers logical architecture:(1) Web Layer, Web layer provides browsers the interface to access Web Server. It includes Web forms and hidden implementation details. Web forms provide the interface to let customers operate and browse, and hidden implementation details execute all the control-event and implement some simple querying and calculating.(2) Web Service Layer, does all the design calculations not included in Web Layer, it mainly includes the "asmx" and "asmx.vb" files. Every "asmx" file is a design calculation pattern that provide interface to let other layers or distributed applications call.(3) Graphics/files Processing Layer, draws all the graphics of designed bridge crane, it includes sorts of applications that produce mechanical graphics and design instructions. The applications are built by Visual Basic .NET with AutoCAD ActiveX Automation and Word ActiveX TM.(4) Data Access Layer, the layer provides data service for whole system, it includes SQL Server database, stored procedures, Transact-SQL and all the code used to access data with ADO.NET.XML Web Services-based Remote Design System for Bridge Crane is implemented by combining parameterized design for mechanical products with network technology; it is applied with Object Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts throughout its designing process. The system provides a wonderful platform and environment for crane engineering; it will liberate engineering designers from the heavy repeated jobs. The system can reduce the cycle of time to market for designing and prototyping new products; this will bring an effective macket exploit approach for crane enterprises.
