In recent years, in order to prevent various kinds of water damage on the highways, the research on water stability of asphalt mixture gets more and more attentions from highway engineers.Based on the domestic and oversea research achievements on water stability of asphalt mixture, a new water stability test, the immersion strength test, is proposed in this paper. The immersion strength test is used to evaluate several factors that affect water stability of asphalt mixture. It is shown by the test data that, among all asphalt water stability factors, i.e., temperature, immersion period, additives, and soil percentage, temperature is the dominant one. Equation is given to calculate the actual impact on the asphalt of individual factors as well. In addition, freeze-thaw split test is carried out for result comparison, and the difference between these two tests is also analyzed, which can be used as references for selection of water stability test schemes.
