Decision-making in process planning is always the pinch point during the development of CAPP (computer-aided process planning), and it is also an important factor determining the performance of CAPP system. In this paper, the method of automatic decision-making for CAPP is studied systematically using solid of revolution parts as study object. Based on that, an intelligent decision making system for process planning is developed. The research work in this paper has solved some existing problems during the development of CAPP. So it can be a worthful reference for future research on relevant areas. The research work in this paper is mainly focused on the following areas: 1. A novel decision-making model for CAPP is presented by proposing an improved mechanism for decision making in process planning and a novel manufacturing resources model so as to solve some problems existing in those conventional methods. And the whole process to realize automatic decision making for process planning is also given. 2. The approach to build the information model of parts in decision-making system for process planning is studied considering the demands of integration between CAD and CAPP. 3. The theory and realization technology of intelligent decision making for process planning are studied. With the idea of expert system, the program for reasoning and the rules of process planning during decision-making are separated by storing the rules in database so as to get more flexibility. And then the function of intelligent decision making for process planning for solid of revolution parts is realized effectively. Furthermore, the technology of machine learning and distributed artificial intelligence (AI) is proposed to be used in the system. It gives an attempt research to improve the intelligence and performance of the system. 4. The method of optimization and evaluation are studied based on the original obtained results of process plans. The optimization model, which decomposing the process into the two aspects of working procedures and routings, can solve the optimization problem in process planning effectively by using genetic algorithm and dynamic programming method for these two aspects respectively.
