With the more and more critical requirements of electricity customs and distribution utility in the aspect of reliability, the method of the fast fault-locating and accurate diagnosis is needed, and is studied widely. This paper presents a method of fault locating based on genetic algorithm which can quickly and accurately locate the position of fault by using the FTU data. This method improves the conventional evaluating function, the new function has ability to reduce the miscarriage of justice and to tolerate the aberrant signals. Meanwhile a new universal switch function is presented both for redial and looped feeds. Compared with the conventional method of fault-locating , the algorithm of this paper has a remarkable improvement in the applicability and general utilization. Furthermore, the paper offers some thoughts to realize the locating practicality.
