With the rapid development of container freight and large container ships, container volume of goods handled will become the key factor in weighting up the port's role. In order to have a role in global container freight in the future, many countries have invested in the construction of container terminals and container reform of traditional ports. Meanwhile, the administrators of ports are aware that the development of ports would lie in the quality of increasing berth efficiency but not the quantity of increasing berth. Therefore, it is necessary to study on optional configuration of handling equipment. Through the optional configuration of handling equipment, Berth handling efficiency will go up, so that it can improve the competitive ability of its own.There are five parts in this thesis. In the first part, the writer made a detail analysis about present situation of container development in Nansha port and point out that the equipment configuration of container terminal is inefficient. In the second part, the writer introduced the knowledge of operating equipment and the styles of handling technology. In the third part, with analyzing the situation of configuration and usage in container ports, the writer found out the problems of which lay in the configuration of handling equipments. In the forth part, from the qualitative point of view, the writer issued the problem and methods that should be noticed in the choice of equipment and configuration in quantity, and then to obtain the reasonable quantity of devices in quantitative study: During construction of ports, at first taking the maximum configuration in handling equipment into account and defining the maximum traffic capacity. Then calculating configuration of equipment in quantity according to the calculation of port' s volume of goods handled and the capability of docks. A formula that could present the mathematical relation of processed equipment amount, the efficiency of equipment in good condition and amount of equipment on duty, was employed in this research stage. In the last part, thewriter gave some suggestion on container configuration of handling equipments in Nansha port at first period.
