Image guidance is the key technology of Precision Guided Weapon (PGW) while image tracker is the core of image guiding system. In the past, image tracker only had single working mode. And what's more, it was only used in the target identification and track in simple background such as in the air or above the sea surface. However, every algorithm only works well under certain condition. The tracking effect may be different within different circumstances. As photoelectric convector and high-speed real-time image processing technology develop rapidly, the realization of image tracker working at multi-mode is likely, i.e., the combination of correlation algorithm with contrast track algorithm is likely. One of its advantages is that it can be used in many backgrounds. Therefore, to further improve the versatility, tracking accuracy and stability of image tracker is very important.The research on intelligent image tracker included in this thesis was a part of the south-west technology and physics institute's research project. The structure of high-performance DSP plus FPGA was used in this image tracker which size was only 110×156mm2. The optimal design of software ensured that image tracking was real-time, high-precision and high-stability. In addition, the image tracker's hardware was characterized by versatility so that it could meet the requirements of different image guiding systems such as television, infrared and radar image guiding systems.Based on the summary of the recent research work inside and outside the homecountry, this thesis presented a lot research work on image tracker by the author. The main works were listed below:1. As the core of image tracker, the advanced DSP technology (ADSP-TS201) and the programmable logic device (EP1S40F1020 chip) were combined together to make certain that instruction was completed within single instruction period. Due to the programmable characteristic of Stratix serialization devices and the powerful function of the ADSP-TS201, the function of image tracker was easy to be extended.
