Optimal operation of reservoir is the main artifice in realizing water resource optimal dispose, which including internal optimal operation of hydropower station and its foundation that runoff forecasting and reservoir water optimal dispose. It is clarified the current situation of reservoir optimal operation in the world, and separately researched that runoff forecasting, reservoir optimal operation and internal optimal operation of hydropower.1. Firstly, it is simply introduced some methods' applications and their limits in the runoff forecasting, such as cause analysis of formation, hydrology statistics, fuzzy analysis, gray system theory, analogy synthesis method and artificial neural networks(ANN) . Secondly, it is demonstrated that the principle of SVM and its application prospect in runoff forecasting.2. It is advanced that minimal abandoned water (MAW) method in reservoir optimal operation, compared with dynamic programming (DP ) in computing precision and speed by using them in an instance. The result indicates that MAW has reliability and superiority and it is an effective method to solve the COD problem in DP.3. It is established that real time feedback corrected forecasting system, making use of FACT factor correcting model. Using this system, it is corrected the forecasting error and the forecasting precision is further advanced. So it is prepared a theoretical basis for improving the possibility of real time optimal operation of reservoir.4. There are introduced the recurrence optimization and genetic algorithm (GA) in internal optimal operation of hydropower station. By using them in an instance, the results show those methods' advantage and disadvantage and their application ranges. And it is obtained that GA is worth of spreading in internal optimal operation of hydropower station.
