As is well known, Intersections are the bottlenecks of urban road network. A lot of traffic accidents and jams occur at the intersection and hereabouts. Thus ,it is absolutely important to solve traffic jams ,and to increase the capacity of intersections and road network. Based on the theory of traffic flow, and the close analysis of the character of traffic flow in the signalized intersection, the theses point out important factor in traffic safety is the existence of conflict points, so how to control traffic flow effectively is the key to improving intersection capacity. Thus, with the research of traditional channelization and signal control, the optimization has been given from the two sides. According to the advanced domestic and global experience in design of channelization, it summarizes the optimal method and the condition in different circumstance. From the other side in signal control, the paper focuses on the adjust signal phase and cycle, which is very important also. Then, the selection of optimal method based on mult-phase has been made, with a making certain optimal module. Meanwhile, a optimal module adapted to saturation intersection is established, which use the form delay of intersection of HCM 2000 in signal cycle. In order to evaluate the optimization project, a system of overall evaluation of intersection using the weighting method is given in the paper ,which applying a scientific bases for the optimization project. At the end of the paper , the method in this thesis has been implemented with Vissim, a simulate tool, and has applied to optimization of compound intersection of ShenZhen, having made the evaluation.
