More security, less the pollution of the environment, economize on energy, fast speed and comfort are the development direction of the modern automobile, and the auxiliary braking device will become a kind of indispensably standard equipment of the vehicle. As a kind of auxiliary braking device, the eddy current retarder's working principle is to chang the kinetic energy of the vehicle to the heat energy. This part of energy will be wasted, especially for the heavy trucks working in the mountain areas and the city buses driving in the congested roads. The research of this paper will bring a feasible method to solve the problem of energy waste on the eddy current retarder.Based on the above point, the following parts will be researched on this paper. First, the paper illustrates a kind of eddy current retarder which can realize energy recovery, then introduce its working principle and classic working mode and control. Second, the formula of braking torque is deduced by the paper, and the mainly parameters of the energy recovery eddy current retarder which has the maximal braking torque of 1500 N.m are given. At the same time, a kind of structure of eddy current retarder is designed by the reference of other congeneric machines. Third, the stress analysis of rotor is performed by using the ANSYS. The load of velocity and temperature are considered together when the rotor's strength is analyzed. Finally, the lightweight of eddy current retarder is researched, and a feasible lightweight method is given by the paper.
