Safety is the focus in the field of shipping. IMO has brought in Formal Safety Assessment (FSA for short), which would be widely applied in the formulation of safety regulations, the management of safe shipping and the ship designing process. Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA for short) has become an efficient and common method for risk analysis both at home and abroad. However, the application of FMECA in China is far lagging behind other countries, owning to the complexity and particularity of marine systems. Therefore, it is high time that extensive research on FMECA should be carried out in the maritime field in China.Main engine system is a complicated and huge system, mainly consisting of machines and electric equipment. It is responsible for providing the vessel with power, and its reliability is the basis for safe shipping. FMECA is made up of two parts, namely, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Criticality Analysis. This thesis proceeds from the structure of main engine system on the vessel, doing FMECA at the very beginning of ship research and design, that is, analyzing all the potential failure modes of the component units in main engine system as well as their effects on the system. Then criticality is assessed according to the seriousness of failure modes and the probability of their occurrence, offering a basis on which the sequence of the improving measures can be arranged, so as to finally enhance the reliability of the main engine system on vessels.In this thesis, the analysis technology has been testified by being applied to a vessel and the expected results have been achieved. Firstly, on the basis of the principles and procedures illustrated beforehand, the main engine system on that vessel is analyzed by means of FMECA, and the failure modes of high criticality, i.e. the weak points of design, are consequently identified. Secondly, according to the assessment results on the questionnaire collected from thirty specialists, the rationality and feasibility of the application of FMECA is finally confirmed.During the writing of this thesis, an effective method has been developed to do FMECA for the main engine system on the studied vessel and to do the relevant calculation.
