With the development of China's urbanization, the traffic problem in cities become more and more serious. The major cause of city traffic problem is the speed of roads building can not keep up with the increasing requirements in city traffic, and the whole layouts of traffic structure are not well considered as well. The public traffic problem is the most serious one among all city traffic problems. And to develop a robust city transportation system is an effective way to solve such problems as traffic jam, air pollution and traveling block. Quick and large range use of buses as the primary vehicle in the general public traffic system is the focal point in designing the cities'intelligent traffic system. Owing to the drawbacks of hardware facilities and low information standards at present, the bus system has suffered a very big hindrance. Building a good public information network is the key to solve the problems caused by city traffic.The thesis puts forward a design of a public traffic information system based on the short distance wireless communication and GPRS technologies. By taking advantage of several technologies as the short distance wireless communication technology, GPRS communication technology, Database technology and computer application management technology etc, the system constructs a complete service and management platform able to gathers, transmits and deals with all kinds of public traffic information issues.The first chapter of the thesis tells us the situation of the public traffic system nowadays and the research direction home and abroad. The functions and overall configurations of this public traffic information system are described in the second chapter, together with the function of every unit. The third chapter explains the short distance wireless communication and GPRS technologies detailedly, emphasizing on principles and characteristic of the short distance radio frequency communication chip nRF2401, more subjects such as point-to-point and point-to multi-points wireless radio frequency communication are discussed on the basis of this chip. Detailed software and hardware designing principles of the public traffic information system's on-board and central control units are introduced in the 4th chapter. The design schematic drawing of each unit and the flow charts of the communication protocols between each unit are also given out. Finally, the 5th chapter introduces the design of the information management center, which includes the hardware configurations and software functions, etc. the details of the designing processes of information management center are emphasized.Using the method of radio frequency gathering buses'in and out information, this public traffic information system needn't the aid of special networks. By self network organization and self communication protocol establishment, it has reduced the cost of data transmission, and also made the configuration of the whole system much more simple.By polling, this system realized point-to multi-point communication, avoided collides of the wireless data. The information management center management software was well designed, and already achieved the requirement of real application.
