Developing rural passenger transportation is the crux for solving the problem of "hard to travel out" for the huge rural population. Yunnan Province does not have well-established rail and water transportation. As a Western province depending mainly on road transportation with an underdeveloped economy, and due to its unique road and economic conditions, the choice of rural road passenger transportation vehicles is vastly different from other regions. In view of the reality of Yunnan, picking up passenger vehicles suitable to the use of Yunnan numerous villages is a very important task. This dissertation conducts analytical studies on factors affecting the use of rural passenger vehicles like the natural, rural road, village conditions and the demand for rural passenger transportation in order to determine the major factors affecting the capabilities of rural passenger vehicles. These are also the main factors to be considered in the choice of models of rural passenger vehicles. The main factors are also the benchmarks for choosing rural passenger vehicles and are taken for the development of a benchmarking system for the choice of models of rural passenger vehicles suitable to the conditions of use in Yunnan rural villages. Lastly, this dissertation conducts a comprehensive assessment of the choice of vehicle models through multi-target decision making theories and analytic hierarchy process. The choice of models for rural passenger vehicles requires multi-target and integrated quantitative analysis. The models of vehicles must, in addition to satisfy the market demand for rural passenger transportation, be considered for whether the capabilities of the vehicles can satisfy the actual needs of the conditions for conveyance in rural villages. This dissertation summarizes the methodologies for guiding the choice of models of rural passenger vehicles. Further, it puts forward that in the use of analytic hierarchy process for quantitative analyses, the use of advanced spreadsheet methodologies for solution finding can effectively solve the problems of tedious mathematical calculations. This would enhance the feasibility and practicality of the above methodology for the choices of model.
