Expression Of The National Character Of The Chinese Modern Architecture

With the tide of the"integration of the world"and"urbanization", it becomes a important task for us to promote the"soft power"and the city culture . As a vehicle of arts and culture, the architecture should also make its contributions to promoting the national culture and strengthening the national cohesion. It is the central link for us to complete this task to achieve the national form of the Chinese modern architecture. How can we design the construction works that both have national and modern character? The thesis analyzed the New Suzhou Museum from the view of expression in traditional style of the modern architecture . It aims to open a door for the nationalization of the Chinese modern architecture.The thesis firstly reviewed the nationalization process of the Chinese modern architecture, pointing out that the New Suzhou Museum is a masterpiece on this aspect. Secondly, the thesis analyzed its two methods that demonstrated the national charecter of the modern architecture: one is to apply the modern materials and geometry design to the traditional Chinese architecture structure—"earth and wood structure"include the group layout,"the big roof", courtyard, walls and other elements to build the modern building; the other is to use the traditional Chinese architectural elements to build the modern architecture space, that is,used the traditional structure elements such as the courtyard, the Hall to build the transparency space. thirdly, the thesis make an analysis of reasons for IM Pei's successful integration of modernity and nationality from the height of thought and education.The last part of the thesis generalizes the reference significance of the successful design of the the New Suzhou Museum to the expression of the nationality of modern Chinese architecture: considering the modernity of architecture of art, we should take modern needs as the starting point and seek inspirations from modern art, especially cubism paintings, to design architecture works with modernity; considering the traditional features of architecture art and the principle that architectures should be in coordination with circumjacent environment, the nationality of architecture should be embodied in our design in the new era, especially in the construction of circumjacent area of ancient architectural structures, historic and cultural street blocks and famous historic and cultural cities. So the designers should profoundly grasp the formal characteristics and spiritual and cultural connotation of traditional Chinese architectures and integrate modernity and nationality soundly As concerning how to integrate modernity and nationality together to design modern Chinese architectures with brilliant national features., the new Suzhou Musuem give us an example.The New Suzhou Museum was a exemplified case that build the Chinese modern architecture in national style. Its successful design provides a reference for the nationalization of Chinese modern architecture on a larger scope and more areas. It contributes to enhance our city's cultural construction and promote Chinese"soft power"as well as enhancing Chinese national cohesion and international competitiveness.
