Stage of "the eleventh-five year program" is the important time for constructing affluent society,and in this time our economy should developed placidly and fleetly.The fifth plenary meeting of sixteen due in CCP pointed out that we should take scientific outlook on development to lead the overall situation,change concept of development,innovate the model of development, enhance the quality of development,drive the economy and society into the path of scientific development.All of the concepts put forward a higher request for speeding up the development of power system.The UHVDC have some ability such as having exceeding distance,exceeding capability and lower loss.It can enhance the efficiency of the exploitation and use for resource,remit the pressure of environmental protect,save the land resource.This technology has notable economic benefit and social benefit, accords with our situation and developing stratagem of energy resource,and it has been regarded and supported by our pilot and the government.From 2005,the scientific research,consultation and design units took hard work to learn and research the UHVDC,mastered the characteristic of UHVDC and transmit network.Educed some conclusions about potential supplied current,reactive power balance,overvoltage and insulation coordination, connection mode of Converters for UHVDC.These conclusions offered the technical gist,technical parameter and technical criterion,and established firm base.This paper analyze the problem of primary design detailedly and then get corresponding conclusion.First,we should solve the principle problem of design.The principle problem is the base of program design and relative to the feasibility, reliability and availability of program.The range of design principal has some aspects as follow:First,argument the feasibility of program.Realizing the condition about the two sides,researching and calculating the parameter which infective the design mostly,and put out the parameter of main equipments and logical connection mode in convert substation.Second,chose the location of substation.The location of substation directly infects reliability of system,and whether according with the policy such as environmental protection policy,saving energy and decrease waste letting.The chose of location of substation should be followed to relative principal.Third,after chose the location of substation,the pivotal problem is put forward the basic design requests such as voltage,current,capacity etc.Then establish the actualization scheme such as main connection mode,equipment parameter, disposal mode,reactive power Compensation etc.Fourth,the principal needs frondose prescribe to verify,the correctness need frondose data to verify, so that we should execute correlative prescribe of capability index.Second,after established the principal,it' s the actualize stage of program.The design contents have short current request,electrification distance,insulate request,dynamic stability and Thermal Stability request, disposal of valve,disposal of DC field,and The Lightning Protection and Grounding.Each of these factors is the basic request for person safe and reliable program,and need to be designed carefully.Third,because the design of convert substation haven't experience to accord,and there may some aspects can be discussed and researched.This paper discussed some methods to enhance the reliability of UHVDC,insulation coordination and overvoltage protection in±800kV HVDC system,and air clearance insulation characteristic in±800kV HVDC system.We should master these correctly and use it rationalization as a designer.But there have so many aspects to be researched and exploited.The paper has only listed some aspects to be discuss,it's far of mature to design the substation.The point of view in this paper just to be reference,deeply hope each craft brother give valuable suggestion.
