With the improvement of the high velocity of EPW and projectile, an urgent problem appears, which is how to ensure the safety and reliable function of the ammunition. Aimed the problems, investigation on the overloading characteristics of ammunition is in great demand. In this paper, over-load environments and characteristics are studied by ball cartridge,experimentations and numerical simulation.Study on over-load environment for shoot and impact indicated that acceleration wave was consisted of a low frequency acceleration wave and a high frequency acceleration wave. The peak value of acceleration for shoot was about fifty thousands of gravity and the peak value of acceleration for impact was approach hundred thousands of gravity. The duration was related with the characteristic of targets, which varied with different targets.Over-load environment and characteristics were tested by Machete test,ringing test and Hopkinson bar. The results shown Hopkinson bar can be used to simulate the over-load characteristics for impact and the ringing test can be used to simulate the over-load characteristics for shoot.The numerical simulation experiment of ringing test was proposed by using finite element analysis and numerical simulation tools of ANSYE/LS-DYNA, and the simulated results were compared with those of experiments. Results shown that the simulated results were in good agreement with the available experimental data, which would provide some theory reference for parameter optimization during the process of ringing test design.
