The voltage regulator is the heart of the electric power system of an automobile. High quality electric power system is the essential requirement for high reliability of the automobile in operation.The current status and the develop trend of automobile electric system are analyzed in the paper. A voltage regulator based on CMOS technology is designed. The high precision and high stability of the regulator is obtained by a negative feed back loop. The modules including voltage reference, error amplification, over-current and over-voltage protection circuits are designed in detail. The Whole design is verified by CADENCE tool, satisfies the pre-defined specifications.The key component of a regulator is the regulating transistor, which is in high voltage and high current condition at operation. The general structure of LDMOS is introduced. An LDMOS compatible with the CMOS technology is designed. The transistor can not only be used in 14 V regulator, but also be adapted for the next 42 V regulator.
