Substation play an mportant role in transmission and distribution network of power systems. The manufacturers all over the world promote various IEDs(Intelligent Electronic Devices)of the substation automation system subsequently as the technology of substation automation is developing rapidly. Due to the network and communication protocol utilized by manufacturers are incompatible to each other, it is necessary to convert the protocols to ensure different manufacturers' IEDs being integrated into one substation system. But the conversion of the different protocols will increase the cost and complexity of the system , also reduce the reliability of the system. So both the manufacturer and the customer expect some authorities to institute an unified standard to qualify interoperability of the IEDs from different manufacturer.The purpose of the paper is to research the designing scheme of interval level IED ,based on UDP/IP/Ethernet protocol stack and MMS/TCP/IP/Ethernet protocol stackwere building by using OPNET Modeler, and the IED models of SAS using twisted-pair and optical fiber switched Ethernet are built. These configurable IED models allow to easily build substation models with different configuration.The paper carries out research work aiming the purpose of desinging of interval level IED based on the researching of IEC61850.Fisrt, analyse the basic theory of IEC61850, including the frame ,model and communication service mapping of IEC61850.Then the paper analyses the technology of industry ethenethernet,establashes the theory foundation of building the IED models of SAS using twisted-pair and optical fiber switched Ethernet.After that ,the paper proposes designing scheme of IED in detail including modeling tool, mapping scheme and distant transmission.At last, the paper analyses the performance of SAS communication netword and provides the experiment basis for building the the IED models of SAS using twisted-pair and optical fiber switched Ethernet.The proposed designing scheme for interval level IED and performance simulation research on substation communication network based on IEC61850 would have some values to the implemention of IEC61850.
