As productivity and living standard improving, the demands of using better-quality public infrastructures, such as power system, have been increasing accordingly. However, the recent power grid is considered to be of many weaknesses. For the sake of improving the effectiveness of utilizing power grid, some research on developing a new generation of power grid, has been initiated by relevant multinational enterprises and power research institutions. Nowadays, due to the improvements on computer technology, network technology and Power Electronics technology, it is possible to develop a Digital Power Grid which is proposed by domestic power experts and power enterprises. The digital power grid is characteristic by facilitated by digital and intelligent technology, which consequently lead to higher efficiency and safety power supply. In part one, the focus is on discussing the definition, structure and operation of the digital power grid. Rather than totally reconstructing original system, the concept of digital power grid emphasizes on modifying and improving the existing system with support from digitized technology. However, it is not easy to achieve this goal due to a large amount of technical problems needed to be solved. One critical issue is modeling, which provides a unified digital infrastructure for the whole power system. The second part mainly studies at relevant modeling theories. Information modeling techniques could help to describe the external world, which means that with the help of this tool, the reality could be connected and even communicate with computer. That is to say, making use of the power of information modeling techniques, people are able to construct an overall picture of information model. Therefore, it is possible for power enterprises to design the top-level model based on the Common Information Model (CIM), which is proposed by international Engineering Consortium (IEC). This model could provide a metadata model to power system. Additionally, this section also discusses how to build a unified model of digital power grid based on CIM via using information modeling techniques. In that last section, by evaluating two particular projects, this paper discusses the detailed procedures of designing a unified model of digital power grid, as well as how to utilize the model for systems integration. The first project is to design an asset model of distribution network for national power enterprises. Specifically, after the study on the asset organization format within CIM and the discussion of relevant domestic and oversea experience, the asset modeling principles are proposed, followed by a practical model of using particular asset types. Meanwhile, the insight of the second project is given to using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) integration method based on CIM in a civic power enterprise in Zhejiang province. That is, with the help of the technique of WebServices and model-driven integration, CIM-SOA model which is proposed in this paper is made use of to build up the service infrastructure. Finally, the SOA integration method is expounded by means of developing example of an actual maintenance scheduling system of power enterprises.
