As the rapid emergence of optical fiber manufacturing industry and widespread application of optical fiber, optical network are increasing used in our production and daily life. OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) is a very important instrument in the fiber production, fiber optical cable line construction and maintenance. It is mainly used to measure the optical fiber fault location, insertion loss, fiber optical connectors, and fiber length. OTDR has attracted much attention with non-destructive measurement, full-featured, security, and easy to use, etc.This dissertation briefly introduces the current development of optical communication, describes the OTDR's importance optical fiber communication field, and development of domestic and foreign research. This dissertation also analyzes in detail OTDR's function modules and their working principle. According to many factors that cause the stability of system, measures are adopted to improve system performance. Such as we use the circulator instead of Y-coupler to improve the system's dynamic range; use 12-bits high speed AD to improve system's resolution.The portable OTDR is designed base on embedded system and FPGA. FPGA controls AD high-speed sampling, data accumulation and the digital filter function. ARM is used for data processing and easy operation. The expansion interface, such as Ethernet port and USB interface, can be extremely welcome for user to restructure their test system. The result is that, FPGA improves the speed and performance of OTDR, the ARM embedded system provide not only friendly interface but also convenience of the application.
