A complete and deep study on the quality evaluation of Chuan Bai Zhi has been done to establish its evaluation standard of quality,on the basis of pre-effort of the project group.The relationship between size and quality of Chuan Bai Zhi was studied for the first time and the result of content determination showed that the samples of small size(the third grade) was better. So the quality should be considered when establish a criterion of commercial grade of Chuan Bai Zhi. The observation of transverse section of the fresh radix showed that the proportion of cortex was in an inverse proportion to the diameter. Which explained why the samples of third grade have more content in a view of morphology. The major identification characteristics of the stem and the leaves were firstly been found through histology study. The form and distribution of secretary tissue was observed specially, it exists separately in parenchyma of the leaf veim petiole and stem ,as secretary canal.The heavy metals and arsenic salt were examined by relatived methods of pharmacopoeia(2000 edition).The content of heavy metals of all samples was under 10ppm,and that of arsenic salt was under 2ppm. Which could be references to the choice of determination methods and establishment of limitation standard.Imperatorin , isoimperatorin and oxypeucedanin such three main coumarins in Chuan BaiZhi were determined by RP-HPLC.Suggested the sum of imperatorin and isoimperatorin shouldn't lower than 0.12% connected to the determination of four years and produce conditions.An UV method was established for the determination of total content of coumarin in Chuan Baizhi. The Coumarin was detected at 300 nm against imperatorin as an index. This method is rapid, reproducible and accurate .It was suitable for measuring the total content of coumarin in Chuan Baizhi. Suggested the content of Coumarin in Chuan Baizhi shouldn't lower than 0.6% compare to imperatorin.The article established fingerprint of coumarin of Chuan Baizhi for the first time. All the Chuan Baizhi samples were divided into two sort: unsulfured and sulfured ones.And identified each characteristic peaks separately. This method could used to distinguish wether the sample was sulfured. Compared the samples of different experiments of Chuan Baizhi GAP by the whole area of coumarin peaks, which showed the same results as content determination. This stable , reliable and repeatable fingerprint method can be used for the quality control of Chuan Baizhi. Analysed the secretion of Chuan Baizhi and compared its fringerprint with the radix . The result showed that the main characteristic peaks in the two fringerprint were same, which identified that the coumarin exists in the secretory tissues.
