Public awareness of the widespread use of herbicides and the possible negative effects of their residues on the environment are incentives for researchers to identify natural products with herbicidal properties. Public harmless control of weeds is thought more highely than before. These years, research on natural protein and their hydrolysis polypeptide as new pre-germination herbicide cause the people's wide regard.Corn gluten meal (CGM), fish meal (FM), com gluten hydrolyzate (CGH) and fish meal hydrolyzate (FMH) were evaluated for herbicidal activity on 10 selected weeds and turf grass species. Physiological and biochemical characteristics of seedling against inhibition were studied. The effects of CGM and FM as natural N fertilization on the growth and regreening of warm-season turfgrass, Zoysia tenuifolia, which was established in former years, were studied by measuring the turf coverage and chlorophyll content in leaf. The conclusions reached include the following:1. CGM,FM and their hydrolyzate reduced plant survival, shoot length, and root development of all the tested species. The susceptive to the herbicidal activity was in the order of root development>shoot length>plant survival.2. The herbicidal activity of FM and FMH was greater than that of CGM and CGH. Under greenhouse conditions, there were significant difference between CGH and FMH in herbicidal activity on Festuca arundinacea, Lolium perrnne, Dichondra repens, Bidens pilosa, and Ageratum conyzoides.3. Under greenhouse conditions, when treated by 300 g FM/m~2, all the tested species except Emilia sonchifolia and Bidens pilosa exhibited root length reduction by more than 90%; whereas treated by 200 g FMH/m~2, all the tested species except Ageratum conyzoides showed root length inhibition more than 80%. It can be concluded that the suitable quantity of FM is 300 g/m~2 while the suitable quantity of FMH is 200 g/m~2.4. With the increasing of the FMH stress quantity, the endogenous protective enzymes and the cellular membranes of the roots of Lolium perrnne were injured. SOD and POD activities were increased and then reduced to some extent with the time, so did the chlorophyll content, soluble protein, soluble sugur content, while the vigor of root system was decreased throughout the incubation, but the membrane permeability and the content of malonaldehyde was increased all along.5. With the increasing quantity of CGM and FM, the apparent quality of turfgrass raised, the aboveground biomass and underground biomass, the total nitrogen and chlorophyll content of turfgrass were all increasing. CGM and FM contains 10-14% N by weight and provides an additional N source to maturate turfgrass with well-developed root systems.
