Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the maxillofacial symmetry in 13-18 year-old adolescents in Shenzhen and detect the correlative factors. Methods: 100 volunteers aged from 13 to 18 were recruited (48 males and 52 females). All of them were taken photographs from the front in accordance with the same standard by the same photographer. Then the photos were mcroscopic observed by 60 chosen persons (30 professionals and 30 non-professionals) and divided into two groups: symmetry group and asymmetry group. All the photos were measured by the software designed by Huawei company. Result: 1. 61 participants were allocated in symmetry group, and 39 in asymmetry group The analysis of facial symmetry was significantly different between the professionals and non-professionals (p<0.05).The gender composition between the two groups was not significantly different(p>0.05).2. The age composition between the symmetry and asymmetry group was significantly different(p <0.05);3. The ratios of the bilateral distance between gonion point and facial midline was significantly different between the symmetry group and asymmetry group(p<0.05). 4. ch_ratio was significantly correlated with Go'_ratio in the asymmetry group. Conclusion 1.The occurrence of facial asymmetry was not significantly different between males and females. Professionals were more sensitive to the facial asymmetry.2.According to the survey, not everyone has an absolutely symmetrical facial appearance. However , most facial asymmetry cases cannot be found by visual observation. 3.Facial asymmetry become more severe with the mandible growth.4. Gonion point is an important factor in the evaluation of facial symmetry, and it should be valued prior to or during the orthodontic treatment.
