Emily Bronte is a great writer, whose Wuthering Heights has become a classic and a must for students majoring in Humanities. Studies on Wuthering Heights at home or abroad have been numerous, and nearly all the critical theories in the twentieth century have been used in the interpretation of this work, and the recently booming narrative theory is one of them. This thesis intends to explore the particularity of the novel in the creation of suspense and the switching of narrator through the perspective of flashback in the narrative structure, hope to contribute a bit to the understanding of this novel.This thesis is composed of two chapters and an introduction and a conclusion.The introduction presents the studies on Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights at home and abroad.The first part of chapter 1 reviews the current situation of narrative theories, and the second part gives the definition of flashback, while the third part summarizes the studies on Wuthering Heights from the angle of narrative theories, and stresses the particularity of flashback narrative.The first part of chapter 2 shows the use of flashbacks in Wuthering Heights, and the second part elaborates on the role of flashback in the narration of the novel from three aspects, like creating suspense, switching narrators etc. The third part points out the flashback in the form of narrative in the novel and other forms of writing.The conclusion concludes the view of the thesis, pointing out that the success of Wuthering Heights is, in part, owing to the use of flashback.
