In this paper, we discussed the special impacts of shadow on media of graphics, particularly its distinct impacts on film and television communication, through two agents for image transfer, human eyes and screens. In the introduction, we focused on analyzing the difference between shadow and the entity. In the main body of the paper, from three points of view, we explained shadow in all aspects. Firstly, the artistic patterns of shadowgraph, reflection and silhouette, which are generated by shadow under different lighting conditions, were theoretically explained, and their real applications were concluded. Secondly, the directors'philosophical considerations underlying the construction process of shadow were discussed. Finally, in the era of new media, how the image constructors should utilize shadow to meet the demands of images in the new period was presented. In the conclusion, we concluded the whole paper and emphasized the value and meaning of shadow. At present, most research on shadow, conducted by researchers at home or abroad, was limited to technical aspects related to light, and no work has deeply analyzed the intrinsic feature of shadow. Differently, in this paper we interpreted the conversion of shadow from theoretical aspects, and proved the critical research values of the existence of shadow, through various artistic patterns from which shadow is generated, particularly through the classic utilization of shadow in images by great masters at home and abroad. By such work, our purpose was to construct a complete framework for the development of shadow in the future. In this paper, we aimed to give insights into the intrinsic meaning of shadow through plain presentation, and to promote the application of shadow in real artistic creation.
