Multi-dimensional Narrative: The Research On The Space-time Dimension Of Picture Book Design

Many media appeared in the form of mix-media in the era of image-reading. They were interwoven with different code, words custom and cognition pattern, and picture book was not exception. Picture book is an interweaving of three narrative elements including text, illustration and book design. And book design not only has the independent narrative function, but also is an important link between text and illustration when they narrate alternately. And picture book has different dimensions of space-time structure, so its narrative must be multi-dimensional.This thesis starts with the research of picture book's characteristic, function and relations of three narrative elements. This thesis discusses spatial structure of picture book, and how to design in different dimensions of space-time structure to develop the function of three narrative elements within the bounds of possibility. By taking advantage of research, designers could know what should take into consideration when designing picture book, and set up the omni-directionally design view which covers text, illustration and book design, then to widen the mentality for the innovation and development of picture book design.
