Translation theories, which root in translation practice, provide necessary instruction for translation practice. Since the study of translation history is the foundation of the translation theory study, it deserves more academic emphasis. In our Chinese translation history, there are numerous distinguished translators with various excellent translations that have contributed a lot to native literature as well as translation study. However, our translation study is not so developed compared with the long translation tradition, which results in the perennial academic argument about the vernacular translation study system. So the meticulous research on translation history, whose main focus is the translation activities, representative translators and influential translation theories, is necessary because it would lay a solid foundation for translation study. In our Chinese translation history, the period of New Cultural Movement is one worth special mentioning. Because translation in that specific period played an important role in the enlightenment of native people, the change of feudal literature and the introduction of progressive ideology into China. All of these were essential preparations for the social and ideological reform. Therefore, a thorough study of the translation activities in this period could be meaningful for the research on translation phenomena and translation studies nowadays. This thesis mainly diachronically studies the major literary societies as well as the representative translators and their main translation propositions in this historical period. On the basis of the analysis of the translation activities and theories, we could have a better understanding of the characteristics of this translation period. Only by doing so can we gain further knowledge of the whole translation history, which is the precondition of the development of translation studies.
