A Report On The Translation Of The Oxford History Of Literary Translation In English(Excerpt)

This report is based on the author's translation practice of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English(excerpt).The author with other eleven classmates from a translation group and successfully complete the translation task under the guidance of our supervisor.Each member of the team is responsible for their own part and writes a translation report independently.Volume two tells about people's attitude toward English literature translation and the translation methods in practice etc.during the year of 1550 and 1660.The content ranges from the translation of corpus to the Bible,drama,history,politics,essays,novels and so on.The author is responsible for the translation of chapter seven and eight in this book.The content involves politics,history,religion,literature and other fields.The language of this part gives priority to narration and also covers a lot of discussion.Since it contains a large number of early modern English vocabulary,Latin expressions and a whole paragraphs of French words,the author needs to consult a lot of relevant articles and books,as well as with the help of authoritative dictionary to accurately understand the original text.Throughout the analysis of the text,the translator chooses the Functional Equivalence Theory.The report consists of five parts.Part one firstly gives a general description to the translation task,including the background information,significance of the translation project and the structure of the report.The second part details the translation process,including the preparations before translation,such as getting familiar with the source text,searching parallel texts,the using of translation tools and setting translation schedule and also teamwork.What's more,translation process and post-translation proofreading are also contained in this chapter.Part three presents the theoretical basis of the translation practice,that is,Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.This part including the origin,development and contents of the Functional Equivalence Theory.Case analysis part ranks the fourth,and belongs to the core of the report.This part attempts to summarize and analyze some of the difficulties in the translating process from lexical level,syntactic level and discourse level in order to achieve the equivalent effect by using multiple translation methods.And finally the last part gives the translation summary,which includes the summary of this translation practice and the problems and disadvantages the translator has encountered.The author hopes that the translation methods and the translation cases in this report can be helpful references to other student translators and useful materials to the academic research.
