The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are four basic skills of language learning. Among the four basic skills, writing plays an important role in foreign language learning, for it's not only regarded as one of the productive skills, but a tool of communication. However, because of its complexity, lots of senior high school students are not quite satisfied with their writing ability even though they have studied English for more than ten years. So it's necessary and urgent for us teachers to find a better way to improve their writing ability.Based on Input-output theory, the author proposes a method of integrating reading and writing to improve the writing ability of senior one students. And a teaching experiment was carried out in the previous year which aims to verify the efficacy of the method on improving senior one students'writing ability.The experiment was carried out in three stages. Firstly, the author chose subjects for the experiment and made some first-phase preparations. Then, in the second stage, the method of integrating reading and writing was used in the experimental class, but the teaching of writing in the control class was carried on as usual. After the test, the author collected all the related data and made a close analysis. The following results proved the author's hypothesis to be true.1.The method of integrating reading and writing exerted positive effects on arousing students'writing motivation and reducing anxiety.2. The method exerted a positive influence on students'writing attitude.3. The method improved the students'writing ability significantly. This kind of improvement can be found not only in the better grasp of vocabulary, but also of the syntax and structure of an article.4. The method helps to establish connections between reading and writing and improve the teaching of writing.Beyond these results, the author also gave some advice on how to integrate reading and writing effectively.1. To carry on practising activities of writing according to the main contents of the textbook.2. To learn and acquire basic language knowledge through reading.3. To understand the difference between the different cultures through reading and improve the accuracy of expression.4. To grasp the features of different writing styles through reading and familiarise the students with some useful writing patterns.
