The Curriculum Standard of English (2003) made it clear that the general goal of the English learning at senior high level is to cultivate students' integrating skills of using English language. In each unit of RSEC textbook (PEP 2003), a new section of "Integrating skills" is added. It consists of reading and writing in most cases, aiming to improve students' integrating skills of using language, especially writing and reading.Firstly, the thesis analyzes the problems and causes of teaching integrating skills (reading-writing) in high schools. Secondly, it classifies the integrating skills (reading-writing) into two types: reading-for-writing and reading-and-writing. Thirdly, it makes a historical review of teaching reading-writing at home and abroad. And finally, it explores its basic theories of linguistics and psychology.Based on the theoretical study, the author has put forward a new teaching mode------"three-stage and seven-step reading-writing teaching mode". In order to provethat this teaching mode is reasonable and feasible, the author first analyses the suggestions given by the curriculum experts in Teachers' Book of RSEC, and then analyses the teaching procedures of two cases published in well-known journals. At last, as solutions to the problems, suggestions are made on classroom teaching, textbook compiling, teacher training and school administrating. Both theoretically and practically, the new teaching mode can help English teachers in high schools to better design their reading-writing lessons and carry them on effectively. It can serve as the reference for teaching other integrating skills of speaking-writing, reading-speaking-writing, etc.
