As an organic component of textbook content, notes serve as prompts, explanation and illustration of texts and are beneficial to students'reading comprehension of the content of texts, particularly the notes to ancient poems and articles. "Learners of classical Chinese articles usually comprehend difficult words and sentences with the help of notes, so notes function as an indispensable walking stick in the learning of them." Accurate, brief, standard and systematic notes are of great importance to the learning of classical Chinese articles. The current curriculum standard revision Chinese textbook of PEP are teaching materials of a selected-works-type in which text notes belong to footnotes. Some of the notes are inaccurate or unstandard, which lies in such aspects as inconsistence between literal translation and free translation in notes, wrong notes, omitted notes, unnecessary notes, repeated notes, etc.. Furthermore, text notes from different selections differ in style, which results in the lack of systematicness as a whole. Which text notes are necessary and which are unnecessary? How and to what extent should notes be made? How can students be provided with the most appropriate basic knowledge by use of notes? All these questions need to be researched carefully. Based on reading through the notes to the PEP high school ancient poems and articles, this dissertation generalizes and analyses such notes and puts forward the author's understanding and reflecting of ancient poems and articles of the current PEP high school Chinese textbooks from the three aspects of accuracy, standard and systematicness. The paper concludes that text notes should have a definite criterion and be brief, standard, sequential as well as elastic.
