As one type of land use that exerts the deepest influence on human beings, urban construction land use is the projection of urban economic activities on the ground. Its changes reflect urban development and it affects the competitive advantage and future development of city. Since the opening up, the pace of urbanization has quickened. Under the accelerating urbanization, the extension of urban land areas to the outer agriculture spaces in Chinese big cities also brought about severe problems in terms of societal, economical and environmental facets. These make urban construction land expansion a focal topic of urban spatial study in China.There is a great deal of literature on urban construction land use spatial expansion. It focuses on expansion pattern, mechanism, growth management, reasonable land scale, and application of RS and GIS technology. On the basis of existing studies, this dissertation uses Fuzhou city as a case study to understand the moan land expansion. The analysis on urban construction land expansion lays the foundation for the research on urban spatial structure and formation evolution in the future. Based on the data of urban construction land extracted from TM remote sensing images in 1988,2000 and ALOS remote sensing image in 2008, with other data such as maps, statistical data in Fuzhou, this article conducts an analysis on the temporal and spatial characteristics of urban construction land expansion in the past 20 years, through studying the urban construction land expansion quantity, morphology pattern, driving forces, existing problems and countermeasures. The result shows that:most urban construction land locate in the 10km buffer area to the city center, expansion gradient index of urban construction land is biggest in the 3km buffer area to the city center and decrease progressively to edge, expansion intensity index of urban construction land is biggest in the 4-5km and 6-7 buffer area to the city center and decrease progressively to edge separately. Urban construction land mainly locates in north, east and south, expansion intensity index and expansion intensity index are biggest in the south. Urban construction land sprawl along the city periphery and tended to be fragmental, urban construction is relative scattering from 1988 to 2000 while relatively concentrated from 2000 to 2008. In macroscopic view, expansion sprawls outward mainly, in microscopic view, there are three patterns namely extending along road, sprawl expansion and leapfrog expansion. The driving forces include nature, social economy, policies and regulations, according to the Pearson analysis, population growth, economic development, fixed investment are the main driving forces. At last, problems and strategy are discussed in the urban construction land expansion. It discusses development tendency of urban construction land expansion, and analyzes land demand quantity in the future, then tries to bring forward the strategy, in order to holding out theory support and policy suggest.
