UTStarcom (NASDAQ:UTSI) is a global leader in the manufacture, integration and support of IP-based, end-to-end networking and telecommunications solutions. UTStarcom's customers include the largest and most respected service providers in emerging and established telecommunications markets worldwide. In its most prosperous period, UTStarcom has an annual turnover of nearly US$3 billion and employs more than 8,000 staffs worldwide. However, UTStarcom began to fade rapidly after 2005, since its mainstay PHS business reached saturation and the global telecommunications market reduced its demand. Up to now, UTStarcom has suffered five consecutive years of losses. Its ups and downs within a dozen years attract worldwide attention. Therefore, research on the rapid rise and decline of UTStarcom will provide valuable information with practical significance to the telecom industry as well as enterprises of other industries.This thesis provides a detailed analysis of the rise and decline of UTStarcom from a number of entrepreneurship and strategic, management perspectives. It contains five chapters. Chapter one is an overview about the background, content, method and value of the study.Chapter two briefly describes the history and current situation of UTStarcom. Chapter three includes detailed analysis of the rise of UTStarcom through several aspects, including its internal and external environment and strategic alliance. Chapter four includes detailed analysis of the decline of UTStarcom through different aspects, including the unity and diversity development of its products and market, organizational structure, human resources, corporate culture, speculative strategy and so on. The final chapter provides a summary of UTStarcom and its development. It also looks into the company's future.
