In order to meet the demand of complexity of international market and the diversification of product and differences of consumer preference, enterprises have to transfer their knowledge across borders to make the most use of different countries' technological resources and reduce cost and risk during the new technology's research and development. At the same time, these have provided local companies with a platform of learning and gaining knowledge from MNC. Among the knowledge transfer research field, however, there is seldom systematically research on the topic of knowledge transfer across borders from absorptive capacity perspective. The paper proposes and analyzes cross-border knowledge transfer systematically with a model. The model proposes four capacities affecting the knowledge transfer performance from MNC to its China local companies. The four capacities are ability to recognize knowledge, ability to understand knowledge, ability to learn knowledge and ability to apply knowledge. To test the model, we study 112 firms with questionnaires using factor analysis and multiple linear regressions. The results suggest that:(1)Ability to recognize knowledge and ability to learn knowledge have positive effect on knowledge contributed by MNC, while ability to understand knowledge has no effect on knowledge contributed by MNC. The influence of the ability to apply knowledge and knowledge contributed by MNC are significantly positive with knowledge transfer performance. The effect of ability to recognize knowledge, ability to understand knowledge and ability to learn knowledge on knowledge transfer performance has not been mediated by knowledge contributed by MNC.(2)Industry has a negative effect on the knowledge transfer performance. That is to say, the knowledge transfer performance of hi-tech industries is better than the other industries. While, there is not any significant association between different connection mode and knowledge transfer performance.
