The highway network is the most advanced trunk channel in China's road net. It is an important part in the integrated transport system. It is also the material basis of the regional space conformity in urban system. The 1966 Urban System in Shanghai's Fifteenth 5 Year Plan is made to construct a new urban system that conforms to the requirement of a cosmopolis. Meanwhile, it can bring up the development of rural area with the economic radiation zones in central area. Objectively, the grade and level of urban system requires that there should be a highway network corresponding to the 1966 Four Grade Urban System in Shanghai. And the road net scheme mode corresponding to the urban system should be taken into shape. At the same time, the formed Shanghai highway network will have an influence on the scale order, functional structure, and space arrangement in urban system.Based on the theories of Central Geography, Spot and Spindle, and Transportation Economic Belt, and a mass of materials of Shanghai's super highway and urban system, the writer analyses the highway network's influence on Shanghai's urban system, tries to explore central city's driving mechanism towards the development of rural area with its highway network, and puts forward some advices concerning Shanghai's situation, in the hope that this paper can offer theoretical support and sample reference to other cities which want to bring up the development of rural area with central city. This paper mainly adopts the framework of Two Clues and Three Layers in the course of research. Two clues are the time and order analysis of the construction of Shanghai's super highway and evolvement of Shanghai's urban system respectively. Three layers are the scale order, functional structure, and space arrangement in urban system. As for the former one, the writer, on the base of a mass of materials and data, reorganizes two sides'developing history, explores their mutual influential relationship, and summarizes the evolvement of the scale, grade and sequence in the new town (the satellite town) of Shanghai's system, the change in space distribution of town construction, and the transformation in the functional and integral structure of Shanghai's town industry. In the course of the study on the time and order of the super highway construction, the writer selects four time nodes to collect the space structure of Shanghai's super highway of different ages. The writer also analyses the adaptability of Shanghai's super highway towards the town with traffic engineering, which lays a foundation on the leading mechanism of Shanghai's highway network to the space arrangement in urban system.Based on the research stated above, it is believed that the reduction of the time spent on entering the downtown area will engender multi-circle highway economic zones established on the different levels of demand of a certain industry, which will alter the spatial configuration of the satellite town of Shanghai's suburban area. Highway network will greatly widen the sphere of direct hinterlands of downtown areas in big cities with the rising of new towns and the assembly of industries. The system of Shanghai's satellite town requires systematical optimization and adjustment, thus form three axial convergence highway zones and an ecological maintenance circle.
