Weihai Port Development Study

As the integration of world economy has accelerated, the relations among countries and regions has are increasingly tied up, and China has inevitably participated in it. With reference to port industry, it becomes extraordinary important to give a new strategic research and orient to a merchant port under such a background. On the basis of the strategy management theory, this article gives a complete and detailed research to the Weihai Port, which includes the analysis to the current condition and the external environment, the prediction to the future throughput, as well as the strategic layout of the future development.There are all-together seven parts in the article. Part one mainly introduces the function and importance of a merchant port, which indicates researching purpose and the content of the article. From Part 2 to Part six constitute the main body of the whole research. In Part two, theory of strategy management has been explained, which is the base of this paper. According to the theory, all the elements constitute the external environment has been listed. Part Three mainly introduce the natural and geographical conditions, infrastructure, and current cargo throughput of the Weihai Port. Then the inner problem and disadvantages has been pointed out. In Part Four, analysis concentrates on the external environment which includes the layout of the hinterland economy, the development of the port and shipping industry, and the competition from nearby ports. By using the SWOT technique, it also conclude the strength, weakness, opportunity and treat of the port.Part Five makes prediction to the future throughputs on the basis of the analysis in the former chapters. By using quantitative method, it first predicts the total throughputs in the next 5-10 years, which will be the foundation of the making out of strategy. Then, by combining the qualitative analysis, it also gives a prediction to the throughput of the chief groups of cargo. According to the result of these predictions, Part Five put forth a new strategic goal for Weihai Port by reference to its function to the economic development of East Shandong Peninsula. That is: to establish Weihai Port to a medium-sized modern regional port with fully function, reasonable arrangement, advanced technique, scientific management, perfect service and high profits. In order to well carry out this strategy, it also gives some positive advice, such as exploring the cargo-transport market of the hinterland area, strengthening the cooperation with nearby ports. The last part makes a conclusion to the whole research.
