This article does research on Nianbadu - an ancient town with a long history located in the Jinhua and Quzhou hilly area, the southwest of Zhejiang province, discusses the economic vicissitude of the town, and analyzes the inside and outside factors resulting in the ups and downs of the town, with the background of the development of the ancient road Xian Xia and the clue of vicissitude of town's business and trade since modern times. Based on the special geographic location and the development of the town, the article focuses on such factors as transportation and migration, which play a significant role in the economic vicissitude of Nianbadu, and elaborates thoroughly and completely on the process in which the town came into being, developed preliminarily, prospered and declined from three different times -pre-Opium War, late Qing Dynasty to the middle of Republic of China, and the middle of R.C. to 1949. Meanwhile, the article, through the comparison with Nanxun town, preliminarily discloses the similarities and differences between the town located in mountainous region and that located in plain area.
