Since the late 1970s, women actively participate in social activities, and the proportion of female members and women managers in organization is increasing significantly. However, Chinese women in career development are not smooth. Many women managers are limited to middle-level career, so that it is difficult to truly become senior managers or entrepreneurs. This thesis took Chinese and American women entrepreneurs as study objectives, and explored the Characteristic of their gender role. I wish this thesis may provide some direction and reference for more women, and it may provide some help for those female who are going to be excellent entrepreneurs in the future. In this thesis, using content analysis, which was based on a short form of Bem Sex-role Inventory, I compared the gender role of 15 Chinese women entrepreneurs and 15 American women entrepreneurs respectively to comprehend the discipline. Furthermore, using case analysis, I analyzed cases and interview materials of women entrepreneurs to sum up how women entrepreneurs balance their family and career. After studying, I discovered that there were a lot of different parts for gender role characteristics between Chinese and American women entrepreneurs. The discoveries were as follows:1. Chinese women entrepreneurs demonstrate androgynous characteristics obviously. Traditional sex-role stereotypes of Chinese women entrepreneurs still have a profound impact. Chinese women entrepreneurs agreed that women entrepreneurs should not show a tough stance. They do not want to be evaluated as not feminine, and also do not want to be evaluated as too weak and incompetent.2. American women entrepreneurs show masculine characteristics obviously. They do not think that male management style is superior to women's, however they believe that women have advantages in many aspects. But at the same time, they are independent, strong, assertive and aggressive, with the sense of competition as men. They firmly believe that they are not worse than men.3. Chinese and American women entrepreneurs have certain characteristics in a very high similarity, such as aggressive, has leader abilities, willing to take risks, willing to take a stand, affectionate and sensitive to other's needs. These characteristics help women entrepreneurs to overcome sex-role stereotypes and break the"glass ceiling". 4. Comparing with American women entrepreneurs, Chinese women entrepreneurs show more gentle and refined features, which reflect the Sino-US cultural differences. Chinese women managers should not blindly follow the example of western women entrepreneurs, but take Chinese culture into account, so as to reduce the impact of sex-role stereotypes.5. Although women entrepreneurs all consider family is a guarantee of career success, but the balance between family and career is still plaguing women entrepreneurs. Especially for American women entrepreneurs, most of them considered the balance between family and career is a big problem. Because of the characteristics of equality and competition in American culture, women entrepreneurs must invest a lot of energy and time to achieve success.Based on the findings of this thesis, in order to break the"glass ceiling", Chinese women managers need to have a positive attitude, build self-confidence, maintain androgynous, and strive to balance between family and career.
