With the rapid growth of the world economy, intellectual property(IP) have been increasingly important in social evolution. For the sake of their development, the vast majority of enterprises make use of knowledge to promote technical innovation. Therefore, competition in IP characterizes that in today's market. Equipment manufacturing industry in China are also confronted with such challenges. IP management plays a central role in their technological innovation, transfer, and proliferation. And it shows overall and long-term strategic significance in technology management. Thus, it is a practical option for equipment manufacturing industry to seek competitive advantages. In the face of global knowledge-based economy era, access management, maintenance management, application management, day-to-day management, and international management of IP has become the core and soul of overall strategies of China's equipment manufacturing industry, and high-level IP management has turned crucial for those enterprises to adapt to the growing market. In terms of research in IP management during the technology progress of equipment manufacturing industry, China has failed to keep pace with developed countries. One of the main causes is that China's equipment manufacturing industry lags behind developed countries. There is a gap between equipment manufacturing technology and IP management of China and that of developed countries. However, many researchers in China have paid attention to this issue in the legal level.Comparing the IP management (e.g., patent data) of the countries developed in equipment manufacturing industry with that of China, the present study analyzed the strategies for IP management at different stages of technology development of equipment manufacturing industry. The current research suggested that it is necessary to adopt different strategies for IP management at different stages of technology development. It also proposed the importance of IP management since those enterprises has entered the time when IP become the key competitiveness. Hence, equipment manufacturing industry must combine the four IP tools--patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, acquire the essential capacity of technical innovation, maintenance, and advance, and aim at long-term development. More attention should be focused on the use of technology patents and trade secrets to protect the company's intellectual assets as well as gain competitive advantages and business profits. IP are the core assets for equipment manufacturing industry, and strong IP management serves as the basis for the survival and development of such enterprises.
