Duan festival is the Shui people's most important festival in China. It has been selected in the first national non-material cultural heritage list in January, 2006. Most of the present articles and books for Duan festival are the history or sample description, lack of specific and in-depth study. Therefore, this essay is to use the anthropological theories and methods, especially the anthropology ritual theory to find its social function and social structure. So, in July, 2005, I went to the only one Shui people autonomous county in China, San Dou Shui people autonomous county Guizhou Province, to collect some Shui people's social culture information, and choose specific fieldwork location. I came back university in September, revised my investigation outline. Then, I spent tree months in San Dong town on my fieldwork, from the last ten-day of September to December, 2005, just Duan festival period. This essay is based on first-hand information on the fieldwork.Ancestor worship is the main rite in Duan festival. It displays the family-center social networks at multiple levels, from family to the village, and more large area. First, family, the basic unit of society, the place of ancestors worship in the family is family members'self-identity ceremony. Second, through analysis the mutual fete border in some families in the village, "You Duan" scope, I found a blood organizational unit "non-eat oil circle", which contains several families. "Non-eat oil circle" is a patriarchal clan. The members are forbidden to eat oil in some occasion, and help each other in community, to enhance the linkages and recognition-section. "You Duan" strengthens the "non-eat oil circle" boundary. "Gong" is a patrilineal lineage, larger than "non-eat oil circle".Previous studies generally considered the "surname" as "gong", but Shui people's "surname" just borrowed form Han, not equal to the "gong". My research found that the majority of cases, the scope of Duan Po organization (such as fund-raising) is the basic covering the "gong" area. The families, who belong to one Duan Po, forbid to intermarrying each other. They have a group of honorary obligations and through Duan Po activities to enhance the clan feeling and strength. Therefore, Duan Po with two implications, it is the location of the ritual activity-held site; it is also a symbol of the "gong" units of the social structure.The horse race and Chi Duan, there are more people who are no-kin participating in. It integrates the society in larger scope.
